We are fed by an encounter with Jesus

I am the Bread of Life

Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield, Sunday 12th January 2020

Alpha and Omega, detail from the east window in Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield.

A blustery winter’s morning. My wife Linda and I walked to church with only a little rain on us. On the way home we went through the park on my suggestion as the rain seemed to have dried up. Bad idea, we got caught in the next squall, which we could have avoided if we had walked straight home after the service. That’s British winter weather for you, changeable.

I was not in the worship band this morning, I had put myself down as unavailable because of my birthday this month and my wife sometimes takes me for a weekend somewhere else. This year was not one of those, but we are having a meal and a stayover followed by breakfast on the day of my birthday, Tuesday. I am looking forward to that.

This week was the second in our series, “I am– Jesus in his own words.” This week “I am the bread of life.” Vicar Mike started the sermon by saying that there were two foodstuffs he could not give up, bacon and bread. I had started the day with a bacon and egg sandwich which combines them both so I sympathised with that.

The sermon was based on the passage in John’s Gospel where Jesus says, “I am the Bread of Life, John 6:25–51. Bread is a bye word for what we need.
Jesus said I am the bread of life, the bread that leads to eternal life shortly after 5000 men and possibly another 5000 women and children were fed with a tiny amount of food. The people there could look back to the Exodus when God literally gave bread from heaven. They saw a parallel with Moses.

Jesus did not say, “I know where to find bread,” or, “I have a great recipe.” Jesus said,  “I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna and died.” Just in the same way as those who ate the bread and fish would die afterwards. They failed to realise that the man who gave bread was the one who could meet their deepest spiritual life. Death is not the end. They wanted Jesus to make more food so that they could feel full again. They failed to realise that Jesus could not just to fill your stomach but save your life.

Jesus offered himself and offers us everything. But you have to receive Jesus to get everything.

Do you put your trust in Jesus who is the bread of life. He said, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away.” It’s not for a few but for everyone. Have you received him?

Jesus is the one that satisfies. The people were looking because they had their fill. They were not satisfied. They wanted to be full again.

There is a God shaped vacuum in the heart of a person that can only be filled with God himself. We try to fill the vacuum with something else. Faith becomes a formula, if I do x and y I get z from God. In v35 Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” ” We need Jesus. We are fed by an encounter with Jesus.

If you have never given your life to Jesus turn to him now, he will not turn you away.

For the rest: Who are your energies focused on? Our encounter may feel like a distant memory, relationship and intimacy with God seen like unreality. Put away the things that do not satisfy, come back to the God who satisfies.

Say, “I want to be hungry for God.”

ROME — Christian sites in Europe suffered a record number of attacks in the year 2019, with some 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments vandalized, looted, or defaced.

Reports compiling the anti-Christian acts during the year document a range of profanation including arson, defecation, desecration, looting, mockery, Satanism, theft, urination, and vandalism.

“Sadly, 2019 was punctuated by increasing incidents of desecration and vandalism of churches around Europe, along with the 2019 fire at the Notre-Dame Cathedral, which captured worldwide attention,” the director of The Observatory on Intolerance and Discrimination Against Christians in Europe, Ellen Fantini, told Breitbart News on Saturday.

“In most instances the perpetrators of these acts were unidentified, but the Observatory has documented that churches and other symbols of Christianity in Europe are targets for many groups — from Islamists to radical feminists, LGBT activists to anarchists and self-proclaimed Satanists,” Ms. Fantini said.

In all, some 3,000 Christian churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments were vandalized, looted or defaced in Europe during 2019, making it a record year for anti-Christian sacrilege.

The greatest number of acts of violence against Christian sites have occurred in France, where churches, schools, cemeteries, and monuments “are being vandalized, desecrated, and burned at an average rate of three per day,” according to reports citing government statistics.

Germany is not far behind, with attacks against Christian churches happening at an average rate of two per day. Meanwhile, attacks on Christian churches and symbols regularly occurred in 2019 in Belgium, the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, and Spain as well.

While the violence overwhelmingly involves Roman Catholic sites and symbols, in Germany, Protestant churches have also been targeted.

Police and mainstream media almost always censor information about the identities and ethnic backgrounds of the perpetrators, so it is difficult to get a clear idea as to who is committing the crimes and the motives behind them — especially when they are religiously driven.

In France and Germany, the sharp rise in anti-Christian attacks has coincided with the recent mass immigration from the Muslim world, yet the lack of official statistics makes it impossible to know precisely how many attacks can be attributed to Islamic anti-Christian hostility.

“European governments and politicians, with a few exceptions, seem reluctant to address this problem,” Ms. Fantini told Breitbart.

Fantini said she agrees with former UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt that “the UK and other Western governments have not grappled with the issue perhaps because of a misguided political correctness or an instinctive reluctance to talk about religion.”

In 2019, only nine European states reported hate crime data relating to Christians to the OSCE for their hate crime report, Fantini noted, which is fewer than the number of states that report hate crimes with an anti-Muslim or antisemitic bias.

According to Bishop Dominique Rey of Fréjus-Toulon, we are “witnessing the convergence of laicism – conceived as secularism, which relegates the faithful only to the private sphere and where every religious denomination is banal or stigmatized – with the overwhelming emergence of Islam, which attacks the infidels and those who reject the Koran.

“On one hand, we are mocked by the media that discredit the action of the Church, in particular regarding sexual abuse, and on the other, there is the strengthening of Islamic fundamentalism. These are two joint realities,” he said.

CP&S comment: This shocking report demonstrates what many have seen coming ever since the Protestant revolution split Christendom apart, thus weakening the defences of the only Church Christ founded and that proclaims the fullness of Truth, the Catholic Church. This is the sorry outcome we are now witnessing today: uncontrolled vandalism with desecration of our Catholic patrimony, and a growing persecution and intolerance towards all Christianity here in its very “cradle” which is Europe. Are we going to sit back and let these enemies of Christ destroy what is left of our Christian heritage? Why is this horror taking place totally ignored by the secular media? Why is the Vatican under Francis silent on the matter?

Preokreti i obrati u napetim međunarodnim odnosima, usponi i padovi u gospodarstvu, zdravstvu te nebrojene druge nesigurnosti mogu pridonijeti našemu osjećaju tjeskobe.
–Saint Teresa Eustochio Verzeri, 1831
++++++++++Piety at home nurtured St. Teresa Eustochio Verzeri (born Ignazia Verzeri in Bergamo, Lombardy, on July 31, 1801). Our saint’s mother, Countess Elena Pedrocca-Grumelli, had considered entering the religious life. Elena heeded the advice of her sister, a Poor Clare nun, though; she decided to become a mother of holy children. Our saint’s father was Antonio Verzeri. The couple had seven children; Ignazia was the eldest one. A young brother, Girolamo de Conti Verzeri, served as the Bishop of Brescia from 1850 to 1853.Young Ignazia, educated at home and mentored spiritually by Giuseppe Benaglio, the Vicar General of the Diocese of Bergamo, became a Benedictine nun at Bergamo. She, focused on the education of young girls at first, expanded her work after founding the Institute of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on February 8, 1831. She, the author of the orders Constitutions and Book of Duties, presided over the education of young girls, of course. She also presided over care for orphans, the elderly, the sick, and the infirm, and supervised retreat centers.St. Teresa died in Brescia on March 3, 1852. She was 50 years old.Holy Mother Church recognized our saint formally. She became a Venerable (in 1922, by Pope Pius XI), a Blessed (1946, by Pope Pius XII), and a full saint (2001, by Pope John Paul II).
O God, whose blessed Son became poor that we through his poverty might be rich:Deliver us from an inordinate love of this world, that we,inspired by the devotion of your servant Saint Teresa Eustochio Verzeri, may serve you with singleness of heat, and attain to the riches of the age to come, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.Song of Songs 8:6-7Psalm 34Philippians 3:7-15Luke 12:33-37 or 9:57-62
The band first performed at Pueblo, Colorado’s Sacred Heart Cathedral in 1970, and has been playing at Masses ever since.
El Mariachi de Pueblo, a Mexican-styled band from Colorado that has exclusively performed at religious services, recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. The band, which has played in every Catholic Church in Pueblo, is made up of about 30 volunteer musicians, three of whom have been with them since their inception in 1970.
The Pueblo Cheiftain spoke with one of these founding members, Jack Quinn, who explained that the band was formed after Fr. Bob Leach, from Sacred Heart Cathedral, invited a mariachi band to play during Mass. The service was such a hit that the parishioners called for the formation of a house band.

    Quinn told the Chieftain:

“Everyone loved it. After the Mass, Father Leach invited Mass participants to consider creating a mariachi of its own. We started out with 75 singers and musicians, which consisted of trumpets, violins, guitars and a single marimba.

“Throughout the years, the sounds of vihuela, guitarron (bass guitar), flutes, clarinets, cymbals and kazoo have added to the flavor of the music.”

For 50 years El Mariachi de Pueblo has brought the church community together, drawing members from local parishes and families. The band is a staple of the Colorado state fair, and they never miss a Holy Day.

If you’re in Colorado and would like to check out one of their performances, you can find them every Sunday at Holy Family Church (9:30 a.m.) and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel (11 a.m.). Yes, that’s right, the band runs across town every week so they can play at two different churches.

If you’re not in Colorado, check out their 2016 self-titled album.
