Autism is good for work

MEDIA WATCH

“Therapists, psychologists and nurses who are autistic say it has made them better at their jobs, but that misconceptions about the condition are forcing them to keep their diagnosis a secret.”

I missed this one. In February this year an article in the Guardian[1], psychotherapist Steph Jones spoke about autism can fast-track rapport-building for some people. Other people who think their autism helps them at work are mentioned in the article: Jaqueline, an advanced nurse practitioner and Zoë, a specialist neurodevelopmental clinician. Yet the article also says that only 22% of autistic people are in paid employment. I have linked to the article below.

I have mixed feelings about this story. First, it points to autistic people in professional jobs and not just on in minimum wage jobs, but it also says that these autistic women in the article feel they have to hide their autism at work because of prejudice. Autism and its effects are still misunderstood, even by those working in psychology.
