Lectio Divina—An introduction

Advent 2023-Lectio Divina part 1

This Advent I am going to look at the practise of Lectio Divina, mostly because it is my favourite form of prayer and meditation. Lectio Divina means “Divine Reading” in Latin. It is a systematic way of reading the Bible dating back to the early centuries of the Christian church.

Lectio Divina has four parts:

  1. Reading: Read the passage slowly and carefully.
  2. Meditation: Think deeply about the text.
  3. Prayer: Having a loving conversation with God.
  4. Contemplation: Resting in God’s presence.

I am doing this in nine parts, not to add anything to what is there but to clarify the sections. They are:

  1. An introduction (this post).
  2. Preparation: What to do before you read and meditate.
  3. Reading.
  4. Meditation.
  5. What if nothing happens?
  6. Prayer.
  7. Contemplation.
  8. Action: What to do about it?
  9. Conclusion.

There will be three posts a week for three weeks, as the fourth Sunday in Advent is also Christmas Eve.

Please join me in this journey.
