Say hello to John

Who is Jesus? part 1

“John’s Gospel, one verse at a time,” was the title of a discussion on the Ship of Fools website in the early 2000s. I am not going to go as slowly as that, and I will take breaks.

What I intend to do is to look at the whole of the Gospel of John in order from the start to the end. I have previously looked at the “I am” statements of Jesus in this Gospel and looked at them again when I did the names of Jesus. I am interested to see how my view of the Gospel has changed over the last eight years.

What I shall be looking at include:

  • The use of signs and symbols in John’s Gospel.
  • John’s use of the books of Moses, particularly the Book of Exodus.
  • Who is Jesus?

I may not always move on, but I may look at a passage or a word again from a different perspective.

As with when I went through the Gospel of Matthew, I expect this to change according to what I find along this long journey, which I plan to follow both prayerfully and thoughtfully.

A warning: It’s September. There will be mentions of the nativity story. John 1:1-18 presents John’s take on the nativity, I’m starting with one blog per week and the reason will be revealed at Christmas. This series will continue to Advent when I’ll explore something different here, not the Bible. Then, from the New Year until Lent, I’ll dive back into John’s Gospel. After Lent, it’s anyone’s guess – I haven’t planned that far ahead.
