Treasure in Heaven
Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:19-24 ESVUK
Who do you serve?
That is an important question for any Christian.
Jesus said that what is the most important thing in your life is what you serve, so if you are the most important thing, you will be self-serving. In the same way if your work, politics or family are the most important things then you will be serving them.
Not that there is anything wrong with any of these things. Not at all. They are very important. But what is the most important thing? Because the most important thing is what you serve.
Even as a committed Christian it isn’t easy. There are good reasons behind the different denominations and traditions within Christianity, I’m not going to knock anybody for following a different one to me. Even those churches that claim no to be traditional tend to do things the same way each week. If you make your traditions the most important thing in your faith then your traditions will control you. Transitions are good things, I would urge anyone to seek God through their tradition, just make sure it is God and not tradition that you are seeking.
The text says you cannot serve God and money. I’d go further:
You cannot serve God and work.
You cannot serve God and politics.
You cannot serve God and family.
You cannot serve God and tradition.
