Remnant

The remnant

Remnant sales are common with sellers of fabric and carpets. anything short of a full roll is considered a remnant, When we moved into our present house our living room was carpeted with a room sized remnant.

In the Bible God makes it clear that a remnant is all that he requires to do great works. He told Gideon to reduce the size of his army from 32,000 first to 10,000 and then to only 300 in order to win the Midianites and in order that God would get the praise.

A REMNANT IS ALL THAT GOD REQUIRES

Speaking of the return of the exiles, at the time of the Assyrian invasion of Israel, Isaiah said,

In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. Isaiah 10:20-21

A remnant will return. Isaiah makes it clear in verse 11, earlier in the chapter that this applies to the southern kingdom of Judah, personified in her capital Jerusalem as well as the kingdom of Israel and her capital Samaria.

The works of this remnant who returned can be found in the stories in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah where a vastly outnumbered people return and rebuild Jerusalem.

A REMNANT IS ALL IT TAKES TO DO THE WORK OF GOD

Acts chapter 1 shows that Jesus had 120 followers after the crucifixion. Nothing compared to the crowds that followed him in his time of ministry. Only a fraction of the 5,000 men, plus the women and children,  that he fed with a few loaves a couple of fish. But these few people, after the Holy Spirit had been poured out became the world’s largest religion, which is still growing.

A REMNANT IS ALL IT TAKES

In the 18th century, the established church was against the teachings of Whitefield and Wesley. But people affected by their preaching became Christians, opened orphanages and schools and led churches. Out of Methodism, based on Wesley’s teachings, sprang what became the trade union movement.

A REMNANT IS ALL IT TAKES

Now we hear a lot in western countries about declining church attendance. Politics has become all about hate on all sides, with more energy being used to say what is wrong with the other side than what you are going to do with, to and for people. Economics and its effect on the GDP is more important than the effects of policies on people. Things do not look good.

But God does not change. He is still on the side of the widow, the orphan, the poor and the foreigner. All it will take is a few people who are prepared to live their lives fully for God, to do his will, to listen, pray and wait on God, and then, having prayed to act an what God tells them to do. They may be in a minority in the country, they may be in a minority in the churches, but this minority, this remnant, is all that it will take for God’s will to be done.

A REMNANT IS ALL IT WILL TAKE FOR GOD’S WILL TO BE DONE
