Roles of the Spirit 3: Companion

Roles of the Spirit 3:

Companion

Two wet elephant play in water and greet each other in the hot sun

…even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:17 ESVUK

When I was looking for a free image to illustrate the Holy Spirit as a companion I did an image search for free to use images using the search string ‘Companion’. What came up were lots of pictures of dogs and oddly among them an alpaca. As these pictures were of solitary animals they did not fit my brief. A bit of digging brought up the two Asian elephants above playing in water. I thought, ‘that suits my blog perfectly.’

The text above says about the Spirit, You know him, for he dwells with you. If the Spirit lives with us then he shares all of our lives, including the fun times. I find that being in a group of Christians that the fun side of things comes through, smiling and laughing come naturally, without the drinking that other people seem to need to get the joy out. When the Apostles were first filled with the Holy Spirit they were accused of being drunk.

Where I feel the Holy Spirit is with me most though is in times of pain, through my times of dark moods.God the Father listens to our prayers in our suffering. Jesus the Son has suffered for us and understands our suffering. The Holy Spirit lives with us and in us and is our companion through all of life from the fun times right through to the darkest moments.

My arthritic pain is particularly high as I write this, proper tears down the cheeks pain, but still, I praise God for his goodness and I am thankful to the Holy Spirit who is bringing me through this. The Holy Spirit is with me in life: The Holy Spirit is in it for the long haul.
