Out of the mouths of infants — Matthew 21:14–17

The King’s judgements

The children got what Jesus was about before the adults. What have they got that adults have not? Some say that they have a simplicity that adults have lost.

Young childrem of different ethnicities reaching towards the hand of Jesus.

14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. 15 But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant, 16 and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read,

“‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies
    you have prepared praise’?”

17 And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

Matthew 22:14-17 ESVUK

The children got what Jesus was about before the adults. What have adults got that children have not? Learning? Theology? Philosophy? Could it be that these things come between us and Jesus?

People act and write according to their preordained ideas. The chief priests and scribes had already decided about what they thought about Jesus, so even seeing the blind and lame being healed could not change their minds. Children could respond to Jesus in a positive way but the chief priests could not. You cannot reason with a closed mind.

It is still happening today, closed minds can do remarkable things to data. There was research in 2020 which said autistic people were deficient because they were more moral than the rest of the population. They corrolated being moral with being deficient because they had already decided that autistic people did not have Theory of Mind, and did not want their research to contradict their premice. I wrote about how furious I was with this at the time.

The chief priests and scribes were in the same situation as these psychologists. They had a premise that they believed so strongly that any evidence that went against that had to be negative. Their conclusion was clouded by having a wrong premise.

The children did not have this problem. Not having a wrong premise to cloud their judgement they were able to celebrate when they saw blind people seeing and lame people walking*. Having a closed mind can stop us from seeing the obvious. I am asking something simple, that you open your mind to Jesus, whether your position is because you have built up a picture of what you think Jesus is or if this is new for you and you have never bothered with Jesus before, please come to Jesus with an open mind.
