Rock

Light pours in through the entrance of a tomb carved into the rock.

40 Names of Jesus in 40 days of Lent — Day 30

…and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual Rock that followed them, and the Rock was Christ.

1 Corinthians 10:4

There are times when logic is not enough.

I have maintained that when reading the Bible that we are to read law as law, prophesy as prophesy, history as history and poetry as poetry. It is not always to be taken literally, but even that approach can throw a curveball. We are to believe that Jesus before the incarnation was in the fiery/cloudy pillar that led the Israelites through the desert. Then this verse said Jesus was in the rock that followed them. So which one is wrong? Did Jesus lead or follow them through the Sinai Desert?

Neither is wrong, both are correct. Jesus was with them in the desert refreshing them, and there is also an alusion to communion wine in the water that came from the Rock here also.

The third allusion is to the death of Jesus. The rock in the desert is broken for the water to flow. Jesus being crucified was no accident but it was the plan of God from the beginning. Jesus was sacrificed for our refreshment. He says to you now, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Jesus may lead us through times of suffering, but he is also there with us to bring refreshment.
