What is theology for?

There is talk in the church about how we should treat homosexuals, again. Or maybe it has never gone away. The traditional stance was that any homosexual activity is always wrong, and for a long time society said the same thing.

But society is changing. These days psychologists and sociologists say that homosexual behaviour is normal, and same sex marriage has been made legal in the UK (though not equal to straight marriage). Even the Church of England is debating the issue.

But should our theology follow where society leads? Of course not.

But we can use the discoveries of the social sciences and look again at what we believe. Just how much of our beliefs are actually what the Bible teaches anyway? It is time to re-read in the light of what we know about man, without ditching what we know about God.
